FSF Announces Keynote Speaker for IASS 2011

Sep 21, 2011

Alexandria, VA, September 21, 2011— The Flight Safety Foundation announced today that Captain Richard de Crespigny will be the keynote speaker for its upcoming International Air Safety Seminar in Singapore on November 1 in the opening session. IASS 2011 will be held at the Mandarin Orchard Singapore Hotel.

Capt. de Crespigny was at the controls of a Qantas A380 on November 4, 2010 when one of its engines failed dramatically, severely damaging the aircraft. He and his flight crew successfully brought the airliner back to Singapore and landed it safely with no injuries or fatalities. His speech will tell the story of that day as well as reflect on lessons learned for the aviation community as a whole.

IASS is expected to bring together more than 300 aviation professionals from all segments of the industry. The seminar, for the first time, involves a keynote speaker. “This will be a riveting speech for the aviation community,” commented FSF President and CEO William R. Voss. “Capt. de Crespigny and his crew exhibited the most important qualities of a skilled flight crew when faced with a sudden emergency in flight. His story is one from which we can all learn.”

Capt. de Crespigny’s speech will include a detailed description of the incident, including how the flight crew reacted to the event, interacted with the passengers and then handled an engine that wouldn’t shut down on the ground and was leaking fuel. The speech will also include his personal reactions to the incident as well as lessons that have been learned.

Following the speech, Capt. de Crespigny will be available for media interviews. All arrangements for those interviews can go through the FSF media department.
