October 8, 2011 — At a media briefing today the Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) and Honeywell presented the Honeywell Bendix Trophy for Aviation Safety to the AWARE Team, a collaboration between the National Air Transport System (NATS) and Airbox Aerospace.
AWARE is a new type of global navigation satellite system-base navigation aid designed for general aviation in order to prevent inadvertent entry into controlled airspace. It produces alerts when it predicts that this airspace will be preached.
“This is the sort of innovation that will address a desperate need in general aviation in the UK,” commented William R. Voss, President and CEO of the Flight Safety Foundation. “It will provide a new tool for pilots so that they can safely avoid restricted airspace with minimal user input. The Bendix Trophy is our small way to recognize this achievement.”
FSF awards the Honeywell Bendix Trophy for Aviation Safety in order to recognize contributions to aerospace safety through innovation in advanced safety equipment and equipment utilization. The award was reestablished in 1998 by AlliedSignal (later merged with Honeywell) and administered by the Flight Safety Foundation.

NATS is the U.K. air navigation service provider and Airbox Aerospace is a leading U.K. aviation navigation system provider. Excellent team synergy made AWARE available after only six months of development. Tom Hedges from Airbox attended the award presentation on behalf of the entire team.
