Singapore, November 1, 2011 — The Flight Safety Foundation presented the 2011 Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award to Capt. John Cox of Safety Operating Systems. The award ceremony was held today during the opening ceremony of FSF’s 64th annual International Air Safety Seminar in Singapore.
The Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award is given out each year in order to recognize a notable achievement in the field of aviation safety in method, design, invention, study or other improvement. Capt. Cox was the principal author of the Royal Aeronautical Society document “Aeroplane Upset Recovery,” a report that provides clear practical guidance for reducing the threat from the leading cause of accidents.
“Capt. Cox has dedicated much of his career towards the advancement of aviation safety, particularly in the fields of upset recovery and mitigating the dangers of smoke, fire and fumes in flight,” stated FSF President and CEO William R. Voss.
“The Foundation is honored to be able to recognize the exceptional nature of the RAS report he authored, plus his extensive contributions to line operations safety.”
The Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award was established in 1956 by the late Clifford E. Barbour and his son Clifford E. Barbour, Jr. in memory of the elder Barbour’s wife who had been killed in a 1945 plane crash.
