Safety Award Presented to Creator of LOSA Collaborative

Nov 12, 2014

Abu Dhabi, UAE – At its 67th annual International Air Safety Summit this week, the Flight Safety Foundation presented Dr. James Klinect with its FSF-Airbus Human Factors Award in Aviation Safety.

“Dr. Klinect has revolutionized the ability of transport operators to understand and improve the safety flight crew performance by being a key member of the University of Texas team that developed and validated the Line Operational Safety Audit (LOSA) in the late 90s,” stated Jon L. Beatty, president and CEO of the Flight Safety Foundation.

LOSA was designed as a tool for improving threat and error management through improved crew resource management and improved flight deck procedures. LOSA has since been shown to objectively identify safety hazards and help operators mitigate those hazards.

Dr. Klinect formed the LOSA Collaborative in 2001 to conduct these audits throughout the world. So far, The Collaborative has completed LOSAs for 67 airlines in 25 countries.

“LOSA has been recognized and accepted for more than 15 years as one of the most valuable human factors tools for addressing risk posed to aviation safety by human error,” Beatty continued. “Dr. Klinect deserves to be recognized for his leadership in this program.

The Flight Safety Foundation–Airbus Human Factors in Aviation Safety Award was established in 1999 to recognize “outstanding achievement in human factors contributions to aviation safety.” The award was instituted to encourage human factors research that would help reduce human errors in aviation operations.
