ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Aviation leaders from across the industry will gather virtually on Day 1 of Flight Safety Foundation’s International Air Safety Summit (IASS) to address the unprecedented challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and outline how stakeholders are working together to drive economic recovery, protect passengers and employees, and ensure safe operations.
The 73rd annual IASS will be held virtually Oct. 19−22. The theme for this year’s event is “Safety Leadership and Global Collaboration During Crisis.”
Following International Civil Aviation Organization Secretary General Dr. Fang Liu’s opening keynote on Oct. 19, Session 1 will feature an executive panel discussing the changes and challenges that are affecting the industry. The panel will comprise Alexandre de Juniac, director general and CEO of the International Air Transport Association (IATA); Luis Felipe de Oliveira, director general of Airports Council International (ACI); and Simon Hocquard, director general of the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO). The discussion will be moderated by Capt. Conor Nolan, chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Governors.
“Bringing together the leaders of IATA, ACI and CANSO is sure to generate a lively and important discussion about what has been done, and what still needs to be accomplished, to move the industry forward and instill confidence in the traveling public, health authorities and governments,” said Dr. Hassan Shahidi, president and CEO of the Foundation.
After a virtual exhibitor networking opportunity, the Day 1 program will resume with two more panel discussions and a closing keynote from U.S. Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Steve Dickson.
“The array of industry leaders lined up to speak on Day 1 and throughout the four-day IASS 2020 is a testament to the industry’s commitment to operational safety and to the health, safety and wellbeing of passengers, crew, ground service workers, air traffic controllers and the range of personnel necessary to make the air transport system work,” Shahidi said.
The IASS 2020 program comprises a mix of live and prerecorded presentations and panel discussions. The program will start in the morning in a different time zone each day so the sessions are convenient for as broad an audience as possible. For example, Day 1 will begin at 0900 EDT (1300 UTC), but Day 2 will begin at 0900 Central European Time (0700 UTC).
The program also features a series of on-demand sessions that will be available for attendees to view at their convenience, as well as opportunities for exhibitor/attendee networking.
