ALEXANDRIA, Va. ─ Medical and aviation safety experts will mark Day 4 of Flight Safety Foundation’s International Air Safety Summit (IASS) with a discussion of traveling safely during the pandemic and an exploration of the measures being taken to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19. Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada Chair Kathy Fox will deliver the closing keynote address of the four-day virtual event on Oct. 22.

The final day of the 73rd IASS will start at 0900 Pacific Daylight Time (1200 EDT/1600 UTC) Oct. 22 with a panel discussion on the epidemiological considerations of COVID-19 in a multimode travel ecosystem. Panelists include Dr. Lin H. Chen, president of the International Society of Travel Medicine and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School; Dr. Robert Steffen, who, among other positions, is a professor emeritus at the Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute at the University of Zurich; and Dr. Davidson H. Hamer, professor of Global Health and Medicine at the Boston University School of Public Health and School of Medicine.

Day 4 also will feature presentations on ways to prevent airborne infectious diseases in the aircraft environment and on how a European carrier developed its own tracing algorithm in response to the pandemic.

To close out this year’s IASS, Fox, who is in both Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame and the Women in Aviation International’s Pioneer Hall of Fame, will offer a TSB perspective on the current environment and a look forward to the coming year.

The IASS 2020 program comprises a mix of live and prerecorded presentations and panel discussions. The program will start in the morning in a different time zone each day so the sessions are convenient for as broad an audience as possible. For example, Day 1 will begin at 0900 EDT (1300 UTC), but Day 2 will begin at 0900 Central European Time (0700 UTC).

The program also features a series of on-demand sessions that will be available for attendees to view at their convenience, as well as opportunities for exhibitor/attendee networking.
