Runway Excursions and Airport Safety Will be Focus of Safety Forum

Jan 15, 2021
The Safety Forum is organized by the Foundation, ERA and EUROCONTROL.

(BRUSSELS) — Airport safety and the new Global Action Plan for the Prevention of Runway Excursions (GAPPRE) will be the focus of the virtual 8th annual Safety Forum scheduled for Feb. 10-11, 2021. This year’s Safety Forum also marks the launch of Flight Safety Foundation’s international campaign to address runway excursions, which are aviation’s most common accident type.

The Safety Forum, which is co-organized by the Foundation, EUROCONTROL and the European Regions Airline Association (ERA), will kick off Feb. 10 with an executive panel discussion on the recently released GAPPRE. Invited panel participants include Eammon Brennan, director general of EUROCONTROL; Alexandre de Juniac, director general and CEO of the International Air Transport Association (IATA); Felipe de Oliveira, director general of Airports Council International (ACI); and Simon Hocquard, director general of the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO).

“Collaboration among international stakeholders is essential to reducing the risk of runway excursions,” said FSF President and CEO Dr. Hassan Shahidi. “The Safety Forum, which draws participation from across the industry, is the perfect venue for launching our runway excursion campaign and discussing the GAPPRE.”

Speakers and panelists on the agenda represent an array of organisations from Europe and North America.

GAPPRE, which was released on Jan. 12, 2021, was developed by an international team of more than 100 aviation professionals from more than 40 organisations. The initiative was coordinated by Flight Safety Foundation and EUROCONTROL, and the consensus-based GAPPRE recommendations were validated by ACI, CANSO, IATA, and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.

Safety Forum registration is now open. To register and download the agenda, visit the Safety Forum events page.
