Alexandria, VA, December 11, 2006 — Volunteers from the Flight Safety Foundation’s CFIT/ALAR Action Group (CAAG) conducted a successful approach and landing accident reduction (ALAR) workshop in Tokyo that included instruction on the use of the FSF ALAR Tool Kit. This was the 24th workshop that the action group has held around the world.
Hosted by the Association of Air Transport Engineering and Research, the workshop attracted more than 135 people from a wide range of aviation sectors, including major and regional air carriers, regulators, air traffic control, and others. The instructors for this workshop included James Burin of the Flight Safety Foundation, Dave Carbaugh of Boeing, Kyle Olsen of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, and John Long of the Air Line Pilots Association.
In addition to the normal ALAR workshop agenda, the participants were treated to two additional presentations. Japan Airlines presented an overview of recent approach and landing accidents in Japan and the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau presented the latest on area navigation and required navigation performance (RNAV/RNP) in Japan.
“The Flight Safety Foundation and the members of the CAAG team are committed to spreading the risk-reducing interventions contained in the ALAR Tool Kit to as many operators and regulators as possible,” commented Burin, director of technical programs at FSF. “These workshops are an effective and practical way to get this important information to the people who can put it to use.”
This was the third and final workshop of 2006. Previous workshops were held in Caracas, Venezuela, and New Delhi, India, this year. Additional workshops will be scheduled for 2007.
