ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — The Brazilian Commercial Aviation Safety Team (BCAST) and a team of air navigation service providers, regulators, safety professionals and a technology company will be honored next month for their outstanding contributions to safety and the aviation industry. The two groups will be recognized during an awards dinner held in conjunction with Flight Safety Foundation’s 76th annual International Aviation Safety Summit (IASS), scheduled for Nov. 6–8 in Paris.
BCAST, which is a joint initiative of Brazil’s airlines and ANAC — Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil, the country’s civil aviation authority — will receive the Jerome Lederer Safety Leadership Medal for significant contributions to the advancement of civil aviation in Brazil and for contributions to aviation safety in the Pan America region. Representatives of both industry and government are expected to be in Paris to accept the award on behalf of BCAST.
An international team comprising NAV CANDA, UK NATS, the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Separate Airspace Panel (SASP), the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and Aireon, the technology company that deployed the first global air traffic surveillance system using a space-based automatic dependent surveillance–broadcast (ADS-B) network, will receive the Foundation’s David Morrison Innovation Award. The award recognizes their collaborative effort to develop and implement real-time monitoring of aircraft traffic and reduced separation minimums over the North Atlantic through the use of space-based ADS-B.

The Jerome Lederer Safety Leadership Medal is named for Jerry Lederer, one of the founders of the Foundation, who, in the 1940s, was first to facilitate the exchange of safety information through sharing of critical information among airlines, government and industry, saving countless lives.
The David Morrison Innovation Award is named for another FSF founder. Morrison was an inventor and cockpit designer who played a critical leadership role in the early days of the Foundation.
