Successful First Go-Team Project Held in Honduras

Alexandria, VA – The Flight Safety Foundation announced today a successful collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and other partners last week to bring the first Runway Safety Go-Team to Tegucigalpa, Honduras. This important work is part of ICAO’s Global Runway Safety Program (RSP) which is focused on reducing runway related accidents.

Runway Safety Teams (RST) are designed to improve and support runway safety by integrating the safety systems of participating organizations.  The RST will provide a forum for all participants to identify, assess, and mitigate issues related to runway safety

Runway Safety Go-Teams provide direct technical assistance and training to States who are establishing RST’s. As a pilot program, the lessons learned in implementation of a Tegucigalpa International Airport RST will be used to assist other States in the future.

“This is an encouraging first step for a new project within the Global Runway Safety Program,” stated Ken Hylander, acting President and CEO of the Flight Safety Foundation. “FSF has been a leader in the runway safety effort and we are very pleased to be a part of this important project. We also must acknowledge the support of the Director General of Civil Aviation of Honduras for hosting the event and coordinating participation. In addition, we are very grateful for the logistical and financial support from Copa Airlines and Zodiac Arresting Systems.”

FSF Director of Global Programs Rudy Quevedo represented the Foundation in this important work. “This project takes the things we have talked about in Regional Runway Safety Seminars with ICAO and puts boots on the ground to implement them” said Quevedo.

“ICAO and the Flight Safety Foundation have an excellent track record of driving collaborative aviation safety improvements and runway safety is certainly no exception,” remarked ICAO Council President, Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu. “ICAO and its many runway safety partners are seeing solid results from our Runway Safety Go-team initiatives and we will continue with these efforts in the interest of delivering effective assistance to States and airport facilities, as well as further decreases on runway-associated fatalities.”

Other partners included the Central American Aviation Safety Agency (COSESNA/ACSA), The Latin American Air Transport Association (ALTA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Otros socios en este proyecto incluyen la Agencia Centroamericana de Seguridad Aeronáutica (COCESNA / ACSA), la Asociación Latinoamericana y del Caribe de Transporte Aéreo (ALTA) y la Asociación Transporte Aéreo Internacional (IATA ) .
