Sumwalt, who is an 11-year member of the NTSB and most recently has been acting chair, was confirmed by the Senate to a two-year term as chair on Thursday.

“Robert’s years of experience in aviation as an airline pilot, managing a corporate aviation department, working in human factors and as a consultant to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration on its Aviation Safety Reporting System make him a natural choice to lead NTSB,” said Foundation President and CEO Jon Beatty. “Robert has an unsurpassed commitment to, and passion for, aviation safety, and he has been a long-time supporter of Flight Safety Foundation. At the Foundation, we have worked with Robert for years, and we looking forward to continuing that relationship in his new role.”
