Foundation to Honor Richard Meikle, Earl Weener at BASS 2024

Apr 5, 2024

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — Flight Safety Foundation will honor Richard Meikle and former U.S. National Transportation Safety Board member Dr. Earl Weener during the Foundation’s 69th Business Aviation Safety Summit (BASS) on April 30–May 1 in Austin, Texas.

Meikle, who is executive vice president, operations and safety, at FlightSafety International, will receive the Foundation’s Business Aviation Meritorious Service Award, which has been presented annually at BASS since 1975 in recognition of outstanding service and contributions to business aviation safety. Meikle has led efforts to use big data to develop and deliver precisely targeted training scenarios that prepare pilots for real-world safety challenges. FlightSafety International is the world’s premier professional aviation training company and supplier of flight simulators, visual systems, and displays to commercial, government, and military organizations.

Weener will be recognized with the Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award for the many contributions he has made to aviation safety and to the Foundation over his long and distinguished career. In addition to his tenure on the NTSB, Weener has served as an engineering executive, safety advocate, engineer, and pilot, and was a driving force behind a number of important industry initiatives, including the Foundation’s approach and landing accident reduction (ALAR) toolkit and its work to prevent controlled flight into terrain accidents.

“Both Richard and Earl have made significant contributions to aviation safety, and we are glad that we are able to honor them in this way,” said Foundation President and CEO Dr. Hassan Shahidi.

The awards will be presented during a special ceremony on Tuesday, April 30, on Day 1 of BASS 2024, which is being held at the Austin Marriott Downtown. For more information on BASS and to register, please click here. Monday, April 8, is the last day to book at room at the conference hotel and get the discounted BASS 2024 room rate.
