After five years without a fatal accident, operators of large passenger and cargo airliners based in the European Union (EU) experienced one fatal crash in 2022; the crash killed two people on the ground, according to data compiled by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
In its Annual Safety Review 2023, which focuses on the safety performance of the European aviation system in 2022, EASA said the number of fatal accidents worldwide has stabilized in recent years, with 10 accidents in 2022 and 11 in both 2020 and 2021, down from 16 in 2019. The sharp decline in air traffic at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021 was reversed beginning in 2022, and by mid-2023, traffic had climbed to 93 percent of pre-pandemic levels, the report said.Â
