Too Much Speed, Too Little Runway

The flaps were still not set for landing when the Learjet 45XR crossed the runway threshold more than 50 kt faster than the appropriate landing reference speed (Vref) and then touched down about midfield. The airplane was substantially damaged when it ran off the end of the wet runway. Both pilots sustained minor injuries, but none of the six people in the airplane was hurt.

The accident occurred at Batesville (Arkansas, U.S.) Regional Airport during a business flight the night of Nov. 29, 2022. The crew was flying the second leg of a mission intended to provide one of the passengers, who was considering purchasing a share of the Learjet, the opportunity to familiarize himself with the airplane, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said in its final report on the accident.

The captain, 40, held an airline transport pilot certificate and had 3,910 flight hours, including 1,560 hours in type. He served as pilot-in-command of business flights under U.S. …
