The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has chosen five airports for the testing of new systems of detecting the risks that can be associated with the presence of drones.
The FAA said in a March 2 statement that the five airports share the operating conditions found at most U.S. airports.
The research is intended to lead to “the implementation of new technologies that will make airports safe for passengers and manned aircraft,” the FAA said, adding that at least 10 technologies or systems will be tested at the airports beginning later this year and continuing through 2023. “[The testing] will create standards for future unmanned aircraft detection and mitigation technologies at airports around the country.”
The five airports are Atlantic City International Airport in New Jersey; Syracuse Hancock International Airport in New York; Rickenbacker International Airport…
