Citing the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) risk assessments after two fatal accidents in 2018 and 2019 involving the Boeing 737 MAX, a government oversight agency said the FAA has not updated risk assessment guidance for more than a decade.
In addition, FAA engineers do not all receive the same guidance or training, and the agency lacks quantifiable human factors data in areas such as pilot reactions to non-normal situations, the U.S. Transportation Department’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) said in a report issued in late April.Â
“As a result, FAA may not be able to ensure it consistently follows the most effective risk assessment processes following a safety event,†the OIG said in the report, the third in a planned series of five reports on its review of the FAA’s certification of the MAX and its safety oversight of the process.
