Airline passengers will be permitted to place electronic devices powered by small lithium batteries into checked baggage — with the devices turned on — according to a policy change by the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The revised requirement will apply to devices housing lithium metal batteries that have a lithium content of 0.3 grams or less and to those with lithium ion batteries with outputs of less than 2.7 watt-hours. (Watt-hour — a unit of energy equal to a power of one watt operating for one hour — is a measure of battery capacity and battery life.)
If a device has lithium batteries that exceed those limits, it must be turned off while in checked baggage, ICAO said.
ICAO said the changes followed recommendations from the ICAO Air Navigation Commission and its Dangerous Goods Panel, which says the previous restrictions “were unnecessary for such small lithium batteries and cells.”
