Aviation accidents increased 11 percent from 2017 to 2018, along with an 8 percent increase in the accident rate, according to a report from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO; Figure 1).
ICAO’s The State of Global Aviation Safety, released in September, said that, in 2018, 98 accidents were reported involving scheduled commercial operations of aircraft with a certified maximum takeoff weight of more than 5,700 kg (12,566 lb). The associated accident rate was 2.6 per million departures, the report said.
In comparison, ICAO member states reported 88 accidents in 2017, the safest year on record, with an accident rate of 2.4 per million departures.
