Warning of disruptions in the U.S. aviation system if the government proceeds with the Jan. 5 deployment of new radio frequencies for wireless broadband, a coalition of aviation industry groups is urging a delay to provide more time to develop a plan that satisfies both the aviation community and the telecommunications industry.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which expressed concern that use of the new frequencies for wireless broadband might interfere with aircraft electronics, said Tuesday that it believes the expanded 5G C-Band network will “safety coexist” with aviation. But at the same time, the FAA issued two airworthiness directives (ADs) cautioning aircraft operators about flights that require radio altimeter data in certain areas, including in the vicinity of airports and heliports.
