The worldwide accident rate for scheduled commercial aircraft declined in 2023 to 1.87 accidents per million departures, and the associated fatality rate fell to 17 per billion passengers, according to data compiled by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
ICAO’s annual Safety Report, issued Aug. 29, said that both figures represented improvement over those for 2022, when the global accident rate was 2.05 per million departures and the global fatality rate was 50 per billion passengers. Overall, the report said that several safety indicators — global accident rate, number of fatal accidents, number of fatalities, and fatality rate — showed 2023 was the safest year in the last five years for scheduled commercial aircraft operations.
“These impressive safety figures reflect the dedication and hard work of the entire aviation community,” ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano said.
