DOT Inspector General: Weak Monitoring Could Hinder Aviation Cybersecurity Planning

The Aviation Cyber Initiative (ACI), a U.S. government effort to limit cybersecurity risks across the aviation sector, lacks mechanisms to evaluate its progress ─ a problem that could inhibit development of a comprehensive cybersecurity framework, a government watchdog agency says.

In a report released in early September, the U.S. Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General (OIG) said that ACI has not “developed mechanisms to monitor and evaluate results, especially for meeting milestones and timetables.”

The OIG report noted that, because ACI also is without an integrated budget and dedicated resources, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the two other federal agencies that participate in ACI ─ the Defense Department and the Department of Homeland Security ─ have extra challenges in accomplishing their aviation cybersecurity goals.
