Investigations of two 2020 runway excursions accidents in Canada demonstrate the need for more easily understood rules for landing with poor visibility, and for improved technology for assessing a runway’s suitability for landing, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) says.
The TSB issued separate reports in late May on the two accidents — a Beechcraft King Air A100’s April 28, 2020, veer-off at Kugaaruk Airport in Nunavut and a Boeing 737’s Jan. 5, 2020, runway overrun at Halifax/Stanfield International Airport in Nova Scotia.
No one was injured in either accident, and the B737 was undamaged. The King Air received substantial damage to its fuselage.
