Despite a slight month-to-month increase in passenger air travel in June, demand, measured in revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs), was down 60.1 percent from the pre-pandemic level recorded in June 2019, according to data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
In May, RPKs were 62.9 percent of the May 2019 levels.
In a statement issued July 28, IATA said that demand for international travel in June was 80.9 percent below May 2019 levels. In comparison, international demand in May was down 85.4 percent.
The sharpest decline was among Asia-Pacific airlines, which recorded a 94.6 percent decline in international air travel from June 2019. June was the 11th consecutive month in which the region had the greatest declines in passenger traffic, IATA said.
