SINGAPORE — The 5th annual Singapore Aviation Safety Seminar (SASS 2019), jointly organized by Flight Safety Foundation and the Singapore Aviation Academy (SAA), the training arm of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), gets under way Tuesday afternoon at SAA with a keynote address by Conrad Clifford, the International Air Transport Association’s regional vice president for Asia Pacific. SASS 2019 runs through Thursday, March 7, and will be followed on Friday, March 8, by a half-day workshop on the Flight Operations Risk Assessment System (FORAS) methodology developed by EVA Air. FORAS is being offered to the industry by EVA and the Foundation.
In addition to Conrad’s keynote address, SASS 2019 will feature presentations and panel discussions on a range of issues and what strategies are making a difference in safety, starting with Foundation President and CEO Dr. Hassan Shahidi’s briefing on the current state of aviation safety globally, and CAAS Deputy Director-General Tay Tiang Guan’s update on key developments in Singapore and the region.
The second day will feature a discussion on safety performance in the Asia Pacific region, and a look at the development and implementation of global flight tracking systems in the wake of the disappearance almost exactly five years ago of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370. Later in the day, controlled flight into terrain and loss of control─in flight will be the subject of hour-long sessions, as will cargo safety and cabin safety.
The third and final day of SASS 2019 will kick off Thursday with a session on initiatives to promote and support runway safety culture, followed by a look at developments in the use of big data for predictive maintenance. Several sessions Thursday deal with aspects related to runway safety, including data collection and processing, enabling technologies and systems that address runway safety risk, and a panel discussion on minimizing the risk of excursions, incursions and other runway safety− related risks. The day wraps up with sessions on technology in safety and training and on lessons learned from past accident and incident investigations.
