ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Flight Safety Foundation has opened nominations for the Gloria Heath Trophy and the Richard Teller Crane Award. Both awards will be presented at the Foundation’s annual Networking and Awards Dinner, which is scheduled for July 9 at the National Press Club in Washington.
The Gloria Heath Trophy, named in honor of Gloria W. Heath, a founder and early leader of the Foundation, is awarded to recognize a woman for notable achievement in civil aviation. Nominees must be currently working in aviation and have demonstrated leadership, excellence, communication, collaboration, and mentoring, among other criteria. The Richard Teller Crane Award recognizes an organization for sustained corporate leadership through lasting contributions in civil aviation. Industry, government, and non-government organizations are eligible to be nominated for the award. The selection committee will consider organizations that have proactively addressed one or more of a number of goals, such as preparing the next generation of leaders, building a culture of innovation, and fostering a resilient and inclusive organization, among others. Nominations for both awards will close on Monday, April 8, 2024.
Heath was an aviator in the U.S. Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) during World War II and was a pioneer during the early days of the commercial aviation industry. She developed the first formal course in aircraft accident investigation and was a driving force behind the Foundation’s efforts to disseminate aviation safety information worldwide.
Crane also was an FSF founder, as well as an entrepreneur who launched the first regional airline in the United States in the 1930s. He was a visionary whose critical leadership role in the early days of the Foundation helped establish it as the preeminent global aviation safety advocacy organization.
