Many airlines and other operators have adopted the threat forward concept of pilot briefings— briefings that focus on active safety threats for the current mission, rather than a standard recitation of data on approach charts or other aeronautical publications. While it’s still a good idea to review frequencies, headings, and other data, the main emphasis of a threat forward briefing is on the hazard most likely to cause problems for the operation at hand.
A 2024 article in AeroSafety World explained. The piece by airline pilot and human factors specialist Kimberly Perkins and former Flight Safety Foundation Board of Governors Chair Bobbi Wells noted: “Mandating the crew identification of threats through standard operating procedures (SOPs) represents an innovative approach to ensuring active engagement in real-time risk mitigation.”
