A Bristow Norway Sikorsky S-92A had climbed to between 3,000 and 4,000 ft after departure from a North Sea drilling platform when occupants heard a loud bang and instruments indicated that the left engine had stopped.
The two pilots conducted relevant checklists, contacted air traffic control (ATC), and broadcast a “Mayday” call. After troubleshooting, the pilots determined that the engine could not be restarted and, concerned that the helicopter’s performance would not allow for an emergency landing on an offshore platform, they then flew to Stavanger Airport Sola, where they landed the S-92. During the latter portion of the flight, they were accompanied by a rescue service helicopter.
