The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), acting in the aftermath of the crash earlier this month of a UPS McDonnell Douglas MD-11, is prohibiting flight by U.S. operators of MD-11 and MD-11F airplanes until the airplanes are inspected and “all applicable corrective actions are performed.”
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the Nov. 4 accident in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S., which killed all three crewmembers on the cargo flight, as well as 11 people on the ground. The left engine and pylon separated from the airplane during takeoff, and the airplane was destroyed by the crash and accompanying fire.
