New Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg says the company must manage a “fundamental culture change” if it is to restore public trust.
In remarks that accompanied the Oct. 23 release of third-quarter financial results, Ortberg, who assumed his position in August, said his goal is to “return Boeing to its former legacy.”
He conceded that public trust in the company has eroded and that “serious lapses in our performance” have disappointed customers. Much of the disappointment stems from two fatal crashes of the 737- MAX in 2018 and 2019 that killed all 346 people in both airplanes and the January blowout of a door plug on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-9 MAX that caused a rapid decompression.
Ortberg said that changing the culture at Boeing is the most important action the company can take.
