Citing an incident in which the rudder pedals on a Boeing 737-8 became stuck in a neutral position after landing, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is urging Boeing and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to act to prevent similar events involving jammed or restricted rudder controls on certain 737s.
The NTSB’s investigation of the Feb. 6 incident at Newark (New Jersey, U.S.) Liberty International Airport is continuing, but the board said in a preliminary report issued Sept. 26 that testing showed that the rollout guidance actuator, manufactured by Collins Aerospace and installed in a number of 737NG and 737MAX airplanes, had been assembled incorrectly. The installation problem allowed moisture to enter the actuators, the NTSB said.
