Federal funds will finance runway relocation and taxiway construction at Tucson (Arizona, U.S.) International Airport.
Acting in the aftermath of a spate of runway incursions earlier this year, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is providing 12 airports across the country with a total of more than $100 million for projects intended to help prevent incursions.
Some projects will reconfigure taxiways to eliminate confusion, build new taxiways or install airfield lighting, the FAA said in announcing the effort in late May.
“Some airfields have complex layouts that can create confusion for pilots and other airport users,” FAA Associate Administrator Shannetta R. Griffin said. “This funding will reconfigure complex taxiway and runway intersections to help prevent incursions and enhance the safety of the National Airspace System.
