In the aftermath of a two-hour halt to aircraft departures from U.S. airports in January, two high-profile runway incursions and other operational issues, U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Acting Administrator Billy Nolen said Wednesday that he will convene a safety team to review the situation and determine what action is needed to maintain the aviation industry’s safety record.
In remarks to the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, Nolen said the review team will “examine the U.S. aerospace system’s structure, culture, processes, systems and integration of safety efforts” and hold a safety summit to determine what additional actions are needed.
“A group of commercial and general aviation leaders, labor partners and others will examine which mitigations are working and why others appear to be not as effective as they once were,” Nolen said.
