Telecommunications giants AT&T and Verizon said today they will voluntarily limit deployment of additional frequencies for their 5G wireless networks near certain airports where the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the airline community say the deployment could interfere with aircraft safety.
Activation of those frequencies was scheduled for Wednesday, but the FAA and the airlines had warned that proceeding with the plans could result in flight cancellations and delays in the delivery of cargo.
AT&T and Verizon said they had agreed to temporarily delay activating some towers near certain airport runways while efforts continue to resolve the airlines’ concerns.
