The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), citing 18 separate occurrences on runways under construction, has issued a safety recommendation calling on Nav Canada to publish graphics illustrating the details of runway closures to help pilots understand the associated risks.
All 18 events, which occurred at airports in Quebec and Nunavut, involved runways where the width, not the length, had been reduced by construction. In 16 of the 18 cases, an aircraft had maneuvered on the closed portion of the runway during takeoff or landing.
