Mexico’s civil aviation authority no longer meets safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), according to an evaluation by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which has downgraded Mexico’s safety rating to Category 2 – a move that prohibits Mexican air carriers from establishing new service to U.S. airports.
The FAA’s action, announced Tuesday (May 25), allows Mexican carriers to continue existing service to the United States, but FAA scrutiny of those flights will be increased. In addition to the ban on new service and new routes to U.S. airports, U.S. airlines will not be permitted to sell tickets with their designated codes on flights operated by Mexican airlines, the FAA said.
