Citing an accident investigation that found that an automated weather station’s information had “at times … not been accurate for weeks,” the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has called on agencies responsible for the stations to authorize action to handle erroneous reports by malfunctioning sensors.
In its safety recommendation letters to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Weather Service (NWS), the NTSB cited the Feb. 15, 2019, crash of a Cirrus SR22 near Ely (Nevada, U.S.) Airport. The private pilot and the passenger were killed, and the airplane was destroyed when it struck the ground 3.4 nm (6.3 km) north-northeast of the airport.
