Transponder Confusion

Citing a 2020 incident in which the transponder of an Embraer 190 transmitted that the airplane was in the air when it was actually on the runway, Transport Canada (TC) is advising operators of aircraft with similar avionics systems to be aware that those systems may indicate that an aircraft is airborne when indicated airspeed exceeds 50 kt, even if it is on the ground.

No one was injured in the March 7, 2020, incident, in which the E190, carrying four crewmembers and 83 passengers, struck a bird during the takeoff roll on Runway 6L at Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport and the flight crew rejected the takeoff.

Although the airplane was still on the runway, its Honeywell Primus Epic integrated avionics system transponder transmitted that it was airborne, and a controller in the airport traffic control tower cleared a Boeing 777-300 for takeoff.
