Evidence-based training (EBT) is a global safety initiative endorsed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) that is changing the way aviation training is developed and delivered.
The primary assumption behind EBT is that, with a focus on scenario-based events involving technical failures, traditional crew training scenarios may no longer meet the needs of the aviation industry. The evolution of technology – in new aircraft generations, the use of high-performance automation and navigation, and air traffic control – has led to a remarkable increase in aircraft reliability and redundancy in daily operations. As a result, crews are less exposed to abnormal and emergency situations during flight, and the function of pilots has evolved to require more automation management and a greater need for monitoring and crew coordination. As a result, training is becoming more of a means to develop and assess crew performance through a series of required “soft” comp…
