The multi-layered approach being used by commercial airlines to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus, combined with requirements for crewmembers and passengers to wear face masks, has resulted in a very low risk of disease transmission in airplanes, according to a new study by the Aviation Public Health Initiative.1
The study reaffirms the validity of actions recommended by regulators and aviation organizations, including Flight Safety Foundation, which call for a multi-layered effort to safeguard the health of airplane occupants by requiring them to wear masks, requiring operators to see that high-touch aircraft surfaces are disinfected and requiring social distancing during boarding and deplaning.
The report on the study also notes the value of on-board ventilation systems with HEPA Â filters, which eliminate more than 99 percent of particles of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and continuously refresh the air supply.
