As commercial aviation changes, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also must change by adopting new processes for certifying novel aircraft designs, developing new standards, and improving data collection and analysis, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) says.
The TRB, part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, investigates and develops solutions to complex transportation challenges. In this case, the investigation was prompted by 2020 legislation that called on the board to analyze emerging safety trends in air transportation and to provide advice on improved methods of identifying, monitoring, and addressing associated safety risks.
The resulting report, Emerging Hazards in Commercial Aviation — Report 2: Ensuring Safety During Transformative Changes, was released in late August as the second in a planned series of six to be completed in this decade.…
